Barnes-Jewish Hospital, part of the BJC Healthcare System is the largest hospital in Missouri and the largest private employer in the St. Louis region. An affiliated teaching hospital of Washington University School of Medicine, Barnes-Jewish Hospital has 1,700 member medical staff with many who are recognized in the "Best Doctors in America." They are supported by residents, interns and fillows, in addition to nurses, technicians and other health-care professionals.

The hospital has unveiled three floors of its Southwest tower, which has 28 new operating rooms on its second and third floors, which is part of a $95 million dollar OR renovation project. The new operating rooms in the tower will be a minimum of 600 square feet to handle the new technologies used in surgery. Currently, operating rooms are about 350 square feet. The rooms also have multiple flat-panel screens, specialized lighting, sterilizers, warming cabinets, patient tracking and video integration systems.

Part of the hospitals mission in supporting these new OR Suites included streamlining process flow and creating the ability to work in a team environment. Among other things this meant automating the communications process for staff.

Using Rauland's ability to develop custom buttons on their Responder 4000 Nurse Call Communications platform and integrate them into the house wide pocket pager system the hospital was able to develop a simple to use notification system.

Each OR Suite is equipped with a series of six push buttons that provides an almost instant pocket page message to the appropriate staff member notifying them of a specific need. These messages include the OR Suite Number, message and time stamp. Each time a button is pushed the system tracks the length of time it takes a staff member to respond to the call, allowing management to assess response times and adjust processes as needed. The five different buttons include notifications for Anesthesia, Pharmacy, House Keeping, Code Team, and OR Staff.
